Muscat itself is a city of wide, sealed roads where any car copes. The four-wheel drive earns its keep the moment you head inland - and on two of these routes the Royal Oman Police check the vehicle before letting you through.
150 km from Muscat, around 2.5 hours. The Saiq plateau sits above 2000 m and the checkpoint at Birkat Al Mouz turns back anything that is not 4x4, regardless of how new the car is.
4x4 Required240 km, roughly 3.5 hours. The final climb to Oman's highest summit and the Balcony Walk is loose gravel with steep switchbacks - low range makes the descent far safer than riding the brakes.

The airport sits in Seeb, about 30 km west of the old town, and it is where most 4x4 handovers happen. Suppliers meet arrivals in the hall or hand the car over in the short-stay car park, so a mountain trip can start the same morning you land.
Delivery covers the districts travellers actually stay in - Al Khuwair, Qurum, Shatti Al Qurum, Ruwi, Mutrah, Azaiba and Al Mouj. Handing a large 4x4 over at the hotel rather than the airport saves you a first drive through Muscat traffic in an unfamiliar vehicle.

A national licence is accepted from most countries when written in Latin script. An International Driving Permit is requested alongside it for licences in other alphabets, and GCC licences are accepted directly.
Passport at handover. The usual minimum age for a full-size 4x4 is higher than for a small car, and a young-driver surcharge may apply below it.
The advance is paid online by card, cash is not accepted for it. Where a deposit applies, it is blocked on the main driver's card at pickup and released after return.

An SUV is a body shape and may be front-wheel drive only. A 4WD or 4x4 sends power to all four wheels and usually offers a low-range transfer case. Police checkpoints at Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams check for genuine four-wheel drive, so a two-wheel-drive SUV will be turned away.
